Failed DIY resin bound driveway showing patchy finish and puddling

YouTube makes resin bound installation look easy. It isn't. Here's what actually goes wrong when a homeowner takes it on — from someone who's rescued a lot of DIY jobs.

The material cost trap

Trade-buying UV-stable resin and washed, kiln-dried aggregate typically runs £45–£60 per m² in materials alone. Add mixer hire, screed rails, gloves, roller — you're rarely saving more than 40% versus a professional quote, and any failure erases the saving several times over.

Temperature and humidity windows

Resin cures within a strict window: surface temperature 5–25°C, humidity below 85%, no rain forecast in the next 4 hours. Miss any of those and the surface goes cloudy, tacky or fails to cure. We monitor these live on every project.

The trowelling curve

Getting a flat, dense, seamless surface at 15 mm depth takes about 200 m² of practice. First-time DIY jobs almost always show trowel marks, joint lines and stone-poor patches once the sun catches them.

When DIY makes sense

A small footpath, garden step or shed apron under 10 m² is a reasonable weekend project. A driveway visible from the road is not.
