Since 2008, paving over a front garden with an impermeable surface larger than 5m² has required planning permission in England and Wales. Resin bound surfacing is the elegant way around that rule — because it isn't impermeable.
How resin bound drains
In a resin bound system every stone is coated in resin and hand-trowelled, leaving a matrix of tiny voids. Rainwater drains through the surface at hundreds of litres per m² per minute, into a permeable base below. Note the difference from resin bonded (scatter) systems, which are impermeable.
What this means for your project
Installed over a permeable base, resin bound surfacing is fully SuDS compliant, needs no planning permission for front gardens, reduces flood risk and eliminates puddles and ice sheets. Councils and water authorities actively encourage it.
